TOSCANA EXTRA ITINERARIES
It’s useless to deny it: to go to Certaldo is kind of discomforting. No matter where you leave from, Siena, Florence or Pisa, the road to go there is full of bends, moving snake-like on top of hills then crossing valleys then on top again. But let’s say it: it’s fantastic. Like riding a horse in its run to the sea. The Volterrana, that’s the name of the road, is centuries old. It used to be the main way for commerce from the coast to inner Tuscany and vice versa, until the highway came into use. The Volterrana is breathtaking if you look at the landscapes, a pain in the neck if you want to move fast and forward. This ancient road is not the only access to Certaldo. There is also the Regionale 429 a road that is quite unpleasant if you want to proceed fast and straight: the 429 is narrow, goes through many small villages on its way to Certaldo and makes you pass from one hill to the other dominating the valleys of central Tuscany.
